Having second thoughts using your bank’s ATM for money withdrawals? Well, you are not alone with that flagging sentiment or apprehension.
Physical ATM cards, while convenient for withdrawals, can be dangerous to your health. It can transmit bacterias, including the dreaded COVID-19 virus, which is continously mutating locally with new variants.
Keeping health a top priority for bank transacting consumers, Banco De Oro (BDO) has stepped up its banking services. The bank is making available cardless withdrawals via mobile QR Codes for bank’s select ATM stations.
“Withdrawing using QR Codes is now available in the Philippines,” said Tovi Mendoza, BDO Senior Vice President and Head of ATM Network & Applied Payment Solutions. “Now, our clients will enjoy faster and more convenient transactions, and most importantly, limit the risk of catching COVID-19 since they will touch the ATM surface a lot less.”
The new service, he added, will benefit those who are encouraged to stay home for their health and safety. “Despite our security controls however, we remind our clients to entrust their Withdrawal QR Codes with others prudently,” Mendoza noted.
QR Coding, which has become convenient means and pop for shopping mall, supermarket, and merchant store purchases in the new normal, makes it easy to withdraw (or make purchases) using your mobile devices. For BDO’s case, all you need to do is open BDO Unibank app, and then generate from it a designated QR Code for specific withdrawals.
And the beauty of this QR Code withdrawal option, you can even set withdrawal this before even going to your bank’s ATM. And for elderlies or PWDs, which are still prohibited to go out, they can use QR Code design to assign someone to withdraw their pensions or savings without needing to lend out ATM card. BDO QR Code, for added security, is specific to single transaction only, meaning you can only use it once and for a specified withdrawal amount only.
QR Codes for withdrawals, which is valid for a day, are a welcome altrnative to traditional ATM card withdrawals. It can only be used once, again only for a specific transaction set. It prevents ATM thefts or unauthorized money withdrawals, giving account holder more control of their finances during this pandemic period. And all you need is an app to get those much needed withdrawals done real time.
How to do QR Code withdrawals
To generate a QR Code, login your BDO Digital Banking App. Click on “More” from the options. Select “Withdraw” then “Via QR.” Pick the account, input the amount, and save the QR Code.
Each QR Code is unique to each withdrawal transaction. It is valid for only 24 hours upon generation to protect your account. BDO clarifies though that a Withdrawal QR Code is different from the Account QR Code used to Send Money.
To withdraw, tap “QR Code Transaction” on the ATM screen and allow the machine to scan your QR Code. Pick if you would like a receipt or not, then wait for the machine to dispense your cash.
Currently, there are over 100 QR-enabled ATMs in Makati City. This year, the bank is looking at installing more of these upgraded machines nationwide. Learn more about the feature, and find a branch near you at: https://www.bdo.com.ph/withdraw-via-qr-code
