In Review: Huawei MateBook D14 (Laptop)
by Tito E
Following the footstep of the Huawei Matebook D15, the Huawei MateBook D14 finally made its way in the Philppines. Running on all powerful AMD processor, this 14 inch screen notebook may just well be the laptop you need while working or studying under a community lockdown scenario.
But let us look at the finer details first so you would know why the Huawei MateBook D14 is a solid choice for your next notebook Getting down to details, let us start with the following features:
Huawei MateBook D14 Notebook, a follow up to the Huawei MateBook D15, is powered by the AMD Ryzen 7 3700U Processor. The D14 tag indicates the notebook’s exact 14 inch screen size, which is large enough for all your multitasking needs while working or studying from home. AMD Ryzen sits well managing a handful of active screen apps, and while keeping notebook’s energy consumption manageably low. It is handy when keeping tabs with two (or more) active social media conferences, including your updating email inbox or minute browsing for unexpected topic reasearch. Incidentally, Huawei did include a 512GB SSD storage for this notebook. It is more than enough, even for those who edit and store videos, keeping files internally available. Powering Radeon RX Vega 10 Graphics, and 8GB of RAM.
Microsoft Windows 10 runs the operating program of the Huawei MateBook D14. It is a welcome feature for anyone who grew up working on a Micrisift designed system generally run by Windows. It comes with pretty much the same security refinements, program user support and including program updates to keep you working flawlessly.
Another program worth noting is PC Manager. What it does, for those without IT background in their veins, is keep track for you the health of your processor (hardware). It is like a roving doctor which keeps your laptop abreast with latest drivers. Updates are adjustable to automatic or manual.
Huawei smartphone friendly
Connectivity is a big deal for the Huawei MateBook D14. A feature called Huawei Share, which works with NFC, lets you connect any Huawei smartphone running on latest EMUI 10 software to digitally connect, if not mirror contents of smartphone live to laptop screen. It is a handy feature for snappy plug-in presentations without needing to transfer so much files between two devices. Connectivity lets you even manage messages or sync existing files from phone to laptop. Either way, it offers a quick means to declutter storage, transfer files between wireless or mirror feature friendly devices in your posession.
Slightly smaller than previous Huawei MateBook D 15, the Huawei MateBook D14 is similarly designed with aluminum material, making body light with handsome steel clean skin finish. Surface is attractively smooth to skin touch, extending to chicklet keypad, which is comfortable typing reports while actively managing on-line apps with this laptop. But mind you the material is solid (sturdy) while swivel hinge binding keypad and screen is seamless with each bend. Notebook’s body is only 15.9mm thin to fit a backpack. It weighs around 1.4kg, making it one of the lightest notebook you can buy. Huawei logo imprint, which is cool seeing from a distance, is imprinted on middle back cover.
What is inside notebook?
Once notebook is opened, voice of Cortana greets you. It is auto triggered on first boot. And it is handy for first time users, helping get around registration process before notebook formally boot up. Cortana can be turned off, proceed with traditional type in boot up. Big Tito suggest leaving Cortana active for a better booting experience. The 14-inch display includes Windows tile app set up. This include settings for buying app, printer and security settings. Facebook (or its Messaging app), Twitter, Instagram or YouTube you need to download seperately. The keyboard comes in black, basically distinguishing it from keypad, which is grey. Top and bezels are remarkably slim but spacious and sturdy. It is great for anyone multitasking with their fingers, allowing you to shift smoothly from keypad, screen and typing.
Chiclet keyboard / Scanner / Huawei Share
The chiclet size keyboard is finger size friendly. It is complimented by a fairly larger trackpad (which does much what your mouse can do) just below keypad. On the upper right side is the fingerprint scanner (which is also power button) for additional security. A sticker below power button indicates the NFC for another feature called Huawei share. Typing is comfortably gentle on your fingers, making it easy shifting between chiclet keys while fast typing reports. The usual typing key sound is reduced even with more key punching pressure. Dim chiclet (two bar option) key lighting option is subtle, none of flashing bright experience, keeping you glued to screen.
Pop up camera
The pop up camera, which is uniquely located between the. F6 and F7 keys, is a welcome design addition. While lower built camera requires angle adjustment to track your face for selfies, keeping camera hidden provides added security for people not mindful of live laptop camera fronting them while typing on-line. It takes getting used to this set up, but knowing my camera is hidden provides ease against unexpected digital camera breach. Camera debuts with 1 megapixel Hight Definition (HD) that is clear enough for indoor or outdoor video conferencing.
Full HD Display
A full HD display does a lot for a 14-inch screen. The MateBook D14 ignites with crisp, full color resolution. While the D14 is not meant for egames, the graphics and color display is sensibly pixel free clear, a plus factor for sleeker wide screen angle effect that makes movies or games playing more vivid or natural. This is made possible with notebook’s Radeon RX Vega 10 graphics. Another great feature is D14’s 180 degrees screen tilt. It is a very handy for anyone doing hand held presentations. Filters can be set with HD screen, for those who read through with their notebooks, efficiently protecting eyes against excessive lighting.
Huawei notebook boast with a mini surround sound Dolby Atmos twin speakers. Built for surround feel, twin speakers is located underneath laptop, that cleanly projects when placed on any flat surface like wood, glass or plastic. It is loud enough to turn your work space into a mini theater. Sound blast is clear but not prickly to ears. If you want some more bass, particularly for YouTube or HBO GO and VIU, D14 compatibly connects with most Bluetooth wireless speakers like Sony or JBL. The 3.5mm audio jack provides ample HD platform audible sound casting. We suggest making use of prescribed Huawei headsets or earplugs for proper noise cancellation effect.
Huawei MateBook D14 up its battery spec from MateBook D15’s 42Wh with more powerful 56Wh upgrade. Initial tests with Spotify got us 18 hours streaming time. Bluetooth speakers connected ate up more batt time hitting 11 hours. Differentiating between notebook’s airplane mode and performance mode, batt time literally hit up between 9 to 10 hours, respectively. Not bad for a day long multitasking drive thorugh on social media, video conferencing, writing and video editing. MateBook D14, which charges with USB C brick plug, doubles as a phone charger for device with type C ports. Actual charging test took generally one-hour without experiencing heating on laptop or charging brick. The D14 is equipped with engine cooling system + designed ventillation for safety measures.
Big Tito Suggestion
For a 14 inch screen Windows notebook running on Ryzen 7 3700U processor, Huawei MateBook D14 (SRP Php42,990) offers a powerful multitasking notebook for all your work from home chores. It is a fast booting notebook, with fast booting charger, and it smoothly connects (if not mirrors) Android and Bluetooth audio devices to screen. It connects efficiently with ZOOM, Google Team, FB Mesenger Video and Instagram for live video streams. It is packed with Windows and Huawei security features working the clock to ensure secured and efficient connectivity and multitasking on a daily basis. Huawei MateBook. D14, with its upgradable features, is an economical investment to anyone poised to work long haul with their laptops.
